The Center for Lake Erie Education and Research (CLEER), a cornerstone of 91自拍 University’s Project NePTWNE, continues to expand its impact as a community-focused learning space through a partnership with that brings student creativity and environmental awareness together.

Now on display on CLEER’s art wall in the Blasco Library is FOUND OBJECTS: Art Inspired by the Unexpected, an exhibition featuring original works created by art students from Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy under the direction of instructor Tara Shannon. The exhibition highlights how young artists transform everyday and discarded materials into compelling works of art, blending artistic expression with lessons in creativity, resourcefulness and the beauty of rediscovery.

This collaboration reflects the mission of Project NePTWNE and CLEER to connect research, education and community engagement. By partnering with local K–12 schools, CLEER provides students with an opportunity to see their work displayed in a public space while inviting families and the broader community to celebrate the student’s creativity and interact with CLEER in new and meaningful ways.

“CLEER was intentionally designed to be a place where science, art and community come together,” said Sherri Mason, Ph.D., director of Project NePTWNE. “By welcoming student voices into this space, we are not only celebrating creativity in our local community but also encouraging young people to think critically about our environment, sustainability and their role in protecting Lake Erie. These partnerships are essential to building a future that is both innovative and deeply connected to our community.”

As visitors explore the exhibit, they are invited to consider the stories behind each object — where it came from, how it was reimagined and what it has become. The students’ work serves as a reminder that art is not only about creation, but about seeing the possibility where others may see none.

“We are so proud to showcase the exceptional talent and creativity of our students, and incredibly grateful for the ongoing partnership of 91自拍 University in providing these unique and exciting opportunities,” Erie’s Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Natalyn Gibbs said. “At Erie’s Public Schools, our mission is not only to educate but to challenge, support and inspire our students and our broader community. This project is an example of how we’re bringing that mission to life.”

To celebrate the student artists and the partnership behind the exhibition, a reception for the families of the artists from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the Center for Lake Erie Education and Research, located within the Blasco Library in downtown Erie. The reception offers an opportunity to meet the artists, explore the exhibit and learn more about CLEER’s growing role as a hub for education, research and community collaboration.

As Project NePTWNE continues to grow, initiatives like FOUND OBJECTS: Art Inspired by the Unexpected highlight how the Center for Lake Erie Education and Research is creating space for collaboration, creativity and community-driven learning that extends well beyond the university.
