91自拍 University will present an engaging lineup of events as it continues its CHESS Speaker Series during the spring semester. Hosted by the university’s College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, the series is designed to educate, entertain and spark curiosity across campus and in the community.
The CHESS Speaker Series draws inspiration from philosopher Immanuel Kant’s call to “sapere aude”, Latin for “dare to know”, encouraging audiences to engage boldly with ideas that shape society, culture and the human experience.
Unless otherwise noted, all events are free and open to the public.
“Does Political Freedom Limit Freedom of Mind?”- Thursday, Jan. 29, 7 p.m., Yehl Ballroom
Abraham Anderson, Ph.D., a philosopher and Kant scholar at Sarah Lawrence College, will explore a passage from Immanuel Kant’s “What Is Enlightenment?” in which Kant argues that full political freedom can paradoxically limit freedom of thought. Anderson will examine Kant’s reasoning and consider its relevance to contemporary political life. This event is part of the Illig Memorial Lecture Series.
“Making, Crafting, Writing: Immigrant Artist Lecture Series”- Wednesday, Feb. 4–Friday, Feb. 13, Palumbo Academic Center, Room 3208
This lecture series is part of an integrative English course focused on writing, identity and material culture. It features a tailor from Sierra Leone, a calligrapher from Bosnia, a watercolor painter from Korea and a beading artist from South Sudan. Each artist will demonstrate their craft and reflect on how art serves as an expression of personal history, memory and cultural identity. The specific presentations’ dates and times can be found at www.gannon.edu/speakerseries.
“Archaeology of Many Centers: Rethinking Past Networks for Today’s Challenges”- Wednesday, Feb. 11, 7 p.m., Waldron Campus Center, Room 219
This lecture examines how lessons from the ancient Levant can inform responses to today’s ecological and social challenges. Drawing on years of excavation at Tall Hisban in Jordan, Oystein LaBianca, Ph.D., will explore how interconnected, self-governing communities endured environmental and political upheaval through regional cooperation and shared stewardship.
LaBianca connects these insights to contemporary sustainability and water-stewardship efforts at 91自拍 University. This event is part of the Collins Lecture Series.
